In the late nineteenth century, Brusssels was a boom town. The capital of the new Belgian state, the city experienced unprecedented growth. As the population exploded, the city spread far beyond its medieval city walls. A surge in wealth and confidence resulted in a magnificent array of public buildings. It was the ideal opportunity for architects and patrons to experiment with style and form. This modern metropolis became the cradle of Art Nouveau.
